Gaming keyboards vs Standard Keyboards

02/10/2021

This is the definition of gaming keyboard – A computer keyboard designed for gamers.
Although there are several controllers with dials and levers for games, the W, A, S and D
letter keys on the standard QWERTY keyboard are also widely used. On gaming
keyboards, which are mostly mechanical, the key switches require less depression and
result in faster action for games. There may also be extra keys that are user configurable
for macros (commonly used key sequences).

“ Is it worth getting a gaming keyboard or should you just use a normal keyboard for
gaming?”

This is a question that troubles most gamers who are thinking of upgrading their current
keyboard. Usually, the objective is to find out whether a gaming keyboard is necessary
and if it really makes a change in gaming performance.

One needs to understand the difference between normal keyboards and gaming
keyboards, in order to answer this question and decide which one the person should get.

Gaming keyboards are designed to be better suited for in game situations and needs.
There is a need for a quick response and fast reaction time, when gaming competitively.
Regular keyboards will usually prioritise ergonomics for a more comfortable and better
typing experience. Typically the differences are more noticeable in the keyboard layout
and the switches used.

Owing to all the benefits that they bring, a true gaming keyboard uses mechanical
switches. Correct input and rapid fire response time is required in the high intense
situations that competitive gamers face.

Usually referred to as dome switches, standard keyboards however use membrane
technology. Owing to the cheap manufacture price and quiet key press, the membrane
technology is used in regular keyboards.

Can one use a gaming keyboard for regular use? – Gaming keyboards function just as a
normal keyboard does, and can be used for the same purpose. All the regular features that
you may find on a normal keyboard can also be found on a gaming device. Although
mechanical switches are typically used in gaming keyboards, they are not limited to the
devices.

Most standard keyboards make use of membrane or dome switches. Membrane
keyboards use silicone domes that sit under each key. The force is transmitted to the
circuit beneath to register the keystroke, when the key is compressed. There are a few
different variations of dome switches but all work very similar.

Gaming keyboards tend to make use of the popular mechanical switches. Keys on a
mechanical keyboard have their own individual switch which makes use of springs. The
switches have activation points which sit above the bottom or lowest point of
compression. Due to this there is no need to bottom out the key to have your keystroke
register.

In conclusion, the difference between normal keyboards and gaming keyboards doesn’t
seem that significant, to many. However, a gaming keyboard does give you more
customization options as well as extra features that can give a person a slight advantage
over their competitor. Gaming keyboards aren’t cheap, compared to normal keyboards
But If you are a competitive gamer, it’s definitely worth buying one. It’s not mandatory
for gaming but, it can mean the difference between success and failure in the PC gaming
world.
