What is special about Gaming Laptops?

02/10/2021

gaming laptop is a small and mobile personal computer which has its own built-in screen. Gaming laptops are essentially the same as standard or business laptops only with upgraded features – but it’s these upgraded features which make all the difference.

gaming laptop means high speed, huge memory, better graphics, and fast processing power. That’s it in a nutshell. Gaming laptops are designed and manufactured specifically with advanced gaming needs in mind so that you can go into battle armed with the power you need to ensure success. With high-end hardware included, gaming laptops are generally much more costlier than entry-level laptops.

Modern computer games normally need additional processing power, and one of the most important differences between a standard laptop and a gaming laptop is video processing. Gaming computers have a video card which is a PC component used to enhance the quality of images shown on a screen. They also have their own dedicated RAM, a GPU and a cooling system where a typical PC generally uses an onboard graphics controller.

So, in simple terms, a gaming laptop contains additional power and has all the attributes which mean you can play games in high quality at high- speeds.

There are four primary aspects of a gaming laptop. These are: The operating system, screen size, processor, and graphics card.

Operating System

The operating system (OS) is important as not all games are released for all operating systems. This means that certain games you want to play might not be playable on your system, so it’s worth checking out which games you can play on which gaming laptop before you spend any of your money. It is extremely frustrating buying a gaming computer and not being able to play the game you’ve actually bought it for!

The Graphics card

The graphics card or GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is the most important specification as it allows games to be played with higher graphics settings and with more visual effects enabled. It delivers the images on your screen by processing the data and transmitting the signal to the monitor. Due to how stressful this process can be when running games, you need a GPU with its own dedicated memory, called VRAM (video memory). Of course, there’s no need for you to get bogged down with tons of technical detail. When your gaming laptop arrives it’s all ready to turn on and play.

Most people will tell you that when it comes to memory, “the more the better” but the truth is that the average gaming enthusiast should be able to do everything they want with 4GB of VRAM. But 6GB would be even better.

A 9 th or 10 th generation Nvidia graphics card will do everything you need to ensure you can game at the level you want to.

The Screen

It’s common sense, if one is playing some earth-shattering game with amazing graphics and sound effects, that one will want to experience the action on the biggest screen size available in whichever format one decides to go for. One can link a larger screen to one’s laptop via an HDMI cable, but performance is affected and one you were going to do that, one might as well just buy a desktop PC.

Screen brightness

This is often an area which is overlooked, but it’s essential that one get a screen with a bright display because it will stop you squinting when the sun shines on it. If you’re one of those gamers who play in your dark dungeon, and basically never see the light of day, then screen brightness won’t be your main consideration. However, if you want to find out more about what is called ‘brightness metrics’ it’s not always straightforward, as some specification sheets don’t give the details.

A good maximum display brightness is 320 nits (usually that means 300 nits average brightness). Anything below 240 nits of maximum (220 nits of average brightness) is not good for a laptop.

Gaming on a laptop is gaining a lot of popularity and that is the reason why you can find so many leading brands like Dell, Sony, Toshiba, etc plunging into the gaming notebooks arena. Buying a laptop for gaming is not hard, as all you need to do is keep certain things in mind.

What makes a laptop designed for gaming purposes different from normal laptops is that it comes with a high-performance graphics card from ATI or Nvidia. A dedicated graphics card will provide dedicated video memory for running heavy games. Your games will function smoothly and you will be able to enjoy without any display issues. Most normal laptops that are available out there in the market run on integrated graphics cards like Intel GMA. Such integrated graphics cards are good but not good enough for playing the latest 3D games.

The video card will help in rendering explosions, landscapes, and actions in a realistic manner. Hence, gaming laptops that are equipped with a graphics card of 512MB, 1GB, and even 2GB will give you unprecedented gaming experience. Some gaming laptops even come with two graphics cards simultaneously. While buying a gaming notebook, always think of the forthcoming games that will be released next year and see if the laptop you are planning to buy supports it or not.

That important issue is HEAT. Or rather how well the laptop you’re considering, can handle heat or overheating. Gaming laptops by their very nature produce a lot of heat, especially when they are put to the max with extreme game playing. The laptop you’re considering must be able to handle this heat with fans or by displacing/throwing the heat out… otherwise your laptop will simply overheat and automatically shut down.

So before you buy that gaming laptop, you must check to see if your particular model has any overheating issues or problems. One of the best ways to do this is to use the search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo) to check to see if there are pages and pages of overheating complaints with your laptop model. Just type in “model x overheating problems” “model x heating issues” into Google for a start and see what turns up. If there are hundreds, even thousands of complaints, then think twice about buying that particular laptop model. You don’t want to end up buying a $4000 radiator. Ouch.

Don’t get burnt, check out any heating issues before you buy that gaming laptop. Make it the last thing you check before you buy.
